The dictionary defines Astrology as the study of the positions of the celestial bodies and their particular aspects to other celestial bodies, in the bounds of a belief that these aspects and bodies have an influence on the course of earthly life and human goings on. The foundational method of Astrology is the observation of the planets and their movement and alignments in their natural course. For obvious reasons, this practice was prevalent in ancient times as well as in the modern age. Historically, astrology was an important part of civilization and dates back to the very earliest eras of the human species. The most well-known civilizations of the world have used the field extensively to govern and anticipate the occurrences of life. There are records of the ancient Chinese, ancient Egyptian, ancient Indian, and ancient Arab civilizations all practicing Astrology. Before the advent Islam, the Arab people were already very advanced in the field of Astronomy.
According to ancient records, the ancient Babylonians were likely the first to use Astrology. The Babylonians were the first civilization to create words for the days of the week to correspond to the Sun, Moon, and planets. These people were also the first to use the model of the twelve astrological houses of the horoscope. Both Baghdad and Damascus were well regarded as centers for both Astrology and Astronomy in ancient times. Egypt was a heavy contributor to the development of Astrology; so much so that it is believed that a selection of astrological signs from the zodiac originated in Egypt.
The Greek astronomer Ptolemy was the first person to write a book on Astrology. He was the first to codify the Sun Sign concept in Astrology - which is still used today. Ptolemy followed this by trying to predict the celestial bodies' positions in relation to each other and the earth through the calculations of their orbits in motion. During this period, Astrology was a subcomponent of Astronomy. Later in the discipline, Astronomy became an exact science and Astrology remained a subcomponent in the study of Theology.
The Chinese practice of Astrology focuses on the five core elements: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. The zodiac signs themselves are also different in other forms and practices of Astrology. India, for one, has a rich history with Astrology, and it was practiced in the Vedic times in India. Astrology is one of the six different disciplines of Vedanga. Ancient Hindu scripture gives us a great deal of importance to the various planetary motions in orbit and their effect on humans. Astrology as a discipline is still studied and practiced by many in modern day India, as the studies and their understandings are viewed and considered as vital in Indian culture. Astrology is used in the present day in India to make decisions regarding marriage, starting a new business, and moving into new homes, etc. Practicing Hindus believe that human fortune or misfortune in life is due to karma, and karma itself is considered to be one of the aspects of self that are influenced by the planetary and heavenly bodies orbits.
Within the Hindu culture, Brahmins are largely considered to be the best authorities on astrology. Astrologers in India generally consider the practice and its hallmarks to be a scientific method to predict the future. They still classify the field of study within the bounds and parameters of the Hindu faith. Hindus generally believe strongly in the power and relevance of astrological predictions. More and more Indian people have began to build their houses according to the principles of Vastu Shashtra; an ancient Indian tradition which is also governed by astrological movements. Hindus believe that the overall wealth and abundance and good benefit of those dwelling within the home are dependant on the Vastu principles while building the home. Astrologers claim that they can prove that astrological predictions are an exact scientific art.
The horoscope, contrary to Western belief and exposure, are only ONE aspect of Astrology. Although reading a daily horoscope has become a trend in the West, it isn't the full extent of Astrology. As Western philosophy generally puts everything to subjective scrutiny and relies on concrete and demonstrable scientific fact; that doesn't stop people from being delighted by the routine of the daily horoscope. In many ways, the Western world is waking up to the notion of improving their lives and anticipating what is up ahead due to astrological factors. Up until the present era, Astrology was never truly scrutinized and researched to the extent that it is now. But the cyclical accuracy of the discipline over the ages, should stand up to the modern scientific method.
