GLOW UP BLOG
HI! HOLA! I'm Mischaela
The INNER GLOW UP Blog was created to share my divine, healing contenT.
I also want to share my expertise and experiences with holistic and spiritual wellnesS.
I dream of a world where spiritual wellness treatments are pursued with the same enthusiasm as the classic Mani-Pedi!
I felt the pull to book an acupuncture session. We all know those pulls, the gentle way a particular thought or encouragement tugs at us at times or comes treading in through the front door of our minds at a half run and invades every moment that we aren't actively focused on something else or away from the world in meditation. The thought that I needed to seek an acupuncturist was THAT intrusive.
In my searches I was lead time and time again to Spirit House Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine in Chicago. I would close my browser and then on a whim do another search for acupuncture and be lead right back to the practice. Perhaps it was something about the name, as the symbolism of the Thai or Khmer spirit house has a powerful meaning for me personally. In any case, there could be nowhere else that I booked this healing from.
It was a breath of fresh air connecting with Founder, Director and Chinese Medicine Physician Genna Louise Robinson. We connected instantly - her calm demeanor and wise (beyond her years may I add) eyes were instantly soothing. A welcome feeling, because I was about to have needles pushed just under my skin to prompt my energetic system to release all that didn't serve, in a process that can often be just as draining as it is cathartic and restorative.
Upon hearing about the recent loss of my grandmother, a loss I'm still reeling from and nursing day by day and discussing some digestive issues I felt I had been having - which caused irritating and relentless headaches....Genna had a plan. She also filled me in on the profound notion that perhaps my digestive issues weren't necessarily my commitment to sneaking in dairy despite being lactose intolerant but perhaps were instead caused by the fact that I couldn't swallow the truth and digest the idea and truth that my beloved grandmother was gone from at least this life. The thought alone and the gentle way she offered it up - allowing me to reach my conclusion on what it was that I was having trouble "digesting" in terms of a concept or new notion in life - were soothing and relaxing. It's always a joy to feel for a short moment that your unspoken pains and burdens are understood. It was a thought that hadn't crossed me, but now gave me a renewed hope that I could manage and work on this "digestive issue" that was really more about information and less about my predisposed inability to digest lactose properly.
As we moved into treatment, Genna paused to take my vitals and record them. In that moment we bonded over the notion that perhaps the universe really does bring people together to work on key healing and key turning points together. The air was humming with that golden hour glow of two people in alignment, in tune and vibing on the same notions. I drank it up.
Genna suggested to me that I do what is known as an Aggressive Energy removal acupuncture treatment to purge my major organs of any lingering energy or stagnant blocks that I may be carrying with me. She explained that "not everyone has this treatment" and that "those that do, may only have it once in their lives." Whatever the case, it absolutely felt right and sat well with me. The process involved a number of acupuncture needles inserted in pairs along my spine - each pair corresponding to my organs. The process was relatively pain free, but I would like to note that both that corresponded to my lungs hurt going in and coming out. Funny thing with the lungs, they hold our emotions of grief. A word I've become very intimate with in the last 90 days as I make sense of what comes next, how do I plan life knowing that she won't be there in the flesh.
I dosed off and had a number of strong epiphanies come to me during the process of allowing the energy to flow freely. Many things about my relationship with my partner, that up until that point had been leaves unturned came to me easily then. I quickly connected into that purple space in the inner vision, when your crown chakra is running on all 8 cylinders and traveling upwards like a pulse in your inner mind's eye. I often have that sensation in places of worship, temples, upon first waking up, and in the deeper meditations that I traverse in my own space.
Walking out of the clinic, I felt buzzy and fumbly. I felt like my energy was oozing out of me and going outwards by 2-3 feet in every direction. I felt the distinct calm but dulled senses feeling that comes with energetic work. As I shared on IG, I heard my inner voice say "You have to walk in your body." as I crossed the crosswalk. Suddenly a bit self-conscious I wondered if I was moving properly or if I looked like a strange caterpillar, as it was certainly descriptive of the way I felt.
We planned I would have the treatment across two sessions, and so I returned that Friday to finish up my process. In the in between, which was only one day - a Thursday...I felt a gentle nagging pain in my spine. Genna explained that it was likely because energy had pooled there as we had asked it to be released from those acupuncture points but hadn't finished the job entirely. With a bit more time with the same placements of needles I was back to processing out the remainder of the Aggressive Energy. It was the same zen, delicious feeling of leveling out my energies and really detoxing my organs of excess energy that didn't serve. After completing both processes, I have felt it is easier to stay on task and on track with very healthy eating and water consumption habits. My mental clarity around my routine and priorities has cleared up and most importantly my creative impulses and visions have returned and I feel like I can write, create, and envision all that I wish to accomplish. Something that was severely limited in the moments just after my grandmother passed away. On the physical side of things my headaches have not returned and my digestive issues have cleared up. I felt the day after the first treatment that there was less bloating in my abdomen and that my tummy now was softer and hung between my hip bones like a hammock.
I have so much gratitude for meeting Genna and being able to experience her unique gift for intuitive healing of others through acupuncture. She knew on an unspoken level just what I'd been through, what I was fighting, and helped prompt my body, mind, and spirit to do what it does best.....heal ITSELF.
The oldest Kardashian sister unveiled a dreamy new collab on her lifestyle website, Poosh. The trio of sisters have been notorious if not infamous for selling everything from body shaping garments to books and everything in between. 2019, however, saw an attention to on brand and creatively directed products and goods. Kourtney Kardashian unveiled her lifestyle site Poosh this past year, and after it comes a steady stream of collabs and product designs.
Kourtney went on to say that the blend helped heal her, and lessen her labored breathing - and not only that...it helped boost her mood. She wanted the diffuser to come with its own special Poosh blend, which she blended with Saje to include notes of lavender and geranium which are known for their calming and soothing aura. The scent deepens with warmth due to orange, grapefruit, and palmarosa oils which are uplifting and energizing. Rose and ylang ylang add a sexy, floral depth. Kardashian uses this scent as a signature home scent and leaves her Saje diffuser timed to emit scent for 7 hour stretches at a time.
The collaboration between Kourt's Poosh brand and Saje is a natural fit. The Canadian company's motto is that they are "a 100% natural company built on the healing power of plants". It's a well known fact by now that Kourt is a huge advocate for all things organic, and to Kim Kardashian's chagrin - gluten free, and this diffuser collab is no exception. Going for an adobe style finish, the diffuser is sculptural and fits in with home decor to be a centerpiece - not just an appliance on a shelf.
Personally, I love tea tree oil and orange blossom in my diffuser when I have a head cold and can often only find relief through oil diffused air, steaming, zinc tablets, and herbal tea. I absolutely relate to Kourtney's sentiment that not only are the surface symptoms treat - but you feel a bit of bounce in your step return. I don't use the Poosh x Saje diffuser but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't considering it for purchase. You can pick up the diffuser in your choice of Grey or White, here: https://shop.poosh.com/products/positively-poosh-ultrasonic-diffuser-kit-white
A person, we shall call him "Adam" had been a meditation practitioner for many years before turning to a doctor for his depression. Adam had been a member of a spiritual community that encouraged their members to turn to God through prayer and meditation whenever it occurred that they were feeling any difficult or painful feelings; for instance: anger, hurt, anxiety, or depression. He had been taught that Spirit would transmute his feelings for him and bring him the peace he so deeply wanted - and all Adam had to do was turn over these feelings to God.
Yet Adam remained depressed despite believing deeply in the practice of turning his difficult feelings over to God to transmute and take care of for him. Adam thought to himself, and occasionally lamented to his doctor and spiritual community members “I have faithfully practiced that which I’ve been taught, so why is is it that I still suffer from depression? What could it be that I'm doing wrong?"
Adam was suffering from the misaligned expectations for what he should feel and be responsible for due to a belief that spiritual practice should take all of his responsibility for these emotions away. This phenomenon is referred to as “spiritual bypass.”
Spiritual bypass occurs when individuals use their spiritual practice as a tool to avoid dealing with and taking responsibility for their feelings and emotions. It can be said that anything that is used to avoid feeling and taking responsibility for one's emotions becomes an addiction – whether that thing or tool used is alcohol, drugs, food, TV, work, gambling, spending, shopping, anger, withdrawal…and YES, even meditation. If you find yourself in that pattern that when a difficult or painful feeling comes up for your awareness, you opt to go into meditation in the hopes of blissing out and getting rid of the feeling, you may be addicted to spirituality. It is an avoidance and escapist technique and if it blocks or diverts someone from dealing with or feeling unpleasant or even dreaded emotions, it can become an addiction.
The difference between leveraging meditation for true healing and self understanding and leveraging it for escapist purposes depends solely on intent. Generally speaking, human beings can meditate for two very different reasons: either to avoid pain or to learn about love.
If one's intent behind meditating is to connect with one's inner self and one's spiritual Guidance in order to learn more about loving themselves and others, then meditation can be good way to step outside of the cerebral and intellectual mind and into one's heart space. This practice is a sound way to connect with the loving inner part of one's self so that you may welcome and embrace even the painful feelings and learning and discovering how you may contributing to your own pain through your words and actions. When your intention is to practice self love and take ownership of your own feelings, in that case meditation can help center you and put you in a space for self compassion so that you may do the inner work to explore your internal feelings.
In the transverse, if you find you are leveraging meditation to bliss out and avoid feeling and moving through your pain, you are leveraging and leaning on your spirituality in an addictive pattern. You are then actively using your spirituality to get around learning about and taking self ownership for your emotional spectrum.
To return to the example, this is what Adam was doing. As he was avoiding learning from his feelings,
and avoiding particular breakthroughs...the ways in which he continued to behave toward himself and others around him caused him to feel depressed. As a result, rather than exploring the words and actions that were causing his feeling self, or his inner child, to feel trapped in a state of depression, he was meditating to push away and bypass any feelings. Instead chasing the bliss.
In his work with a psychologist, Adam was able to discover that he was constantly either ignoring his inner child – his feeling self – or he was in a state of self-judgment. This combination of ignoring himself – which he engaged in primarily through meditation – and judging himself resulted in his inner child feeling unloved, unimportant, and especially unseen. In reflection, Adam saw that if he treated his actual children in the way he treated himself through his treatment of his inner child – ignoring their feelings and constantly judging them – they would also feel unloved and depressed. Adam did attend to his actual children’s feelings and needs, and it was merely his own that he was ignoring and judging. This comparison and parallel let him see exactly how he had been off track in his thinking and treatment of self.
Adam came to the realization that he was treating himself the way his parents had treated him. By anyone's estimation Adam was a much better parent to his children than his parents had been with him, but through what he had internalized about himself and the attention to needs and self he deserved - he was parenting his own inner child in the way he had been parented. What's more, not only was he treating himself the way he had been treated as a child, but he was treating himself the way his parents had treated themselves regarding their feelings and emotional management. For this reason, Adam was not being a good role model for his children regarding personal emotional responsibility, just as his parents had been a poor role model for him.
Through his dedicated inner work, Adam learned the Inner Bonding process. Adam learned to welcome his painful feelings during meditation and to sit with them. He learned to quiet the self-judgmental part of himself and to engage with himself with loving care and respect. He learned to take loving action in his own best interests so that his inner child would not feel that sense of abandonment from him. It was truly the inner abandonment that was causing his depression the whole time. Adam discovered that his depression was actually a gift, a teacher, a light to illuminate what was still dark – a way his inner child was tell him that he was not being loving with himself. With mindful action, Adam learned to take loving care of himself and his depression disappeared. He could now use meditation and inner connection as a tool to explore and take inventory of his feelings, his true feelings - he no longer misused meditation as a tool for spiritual bypass.
Although you may feel as though you are totally alone in this life, it is believed and felt that there are Divine Companions whom are always with us. Before each incarnation, they choose to accompany us through this particular lifetime - from the moment we enter the world and until we leave. Spirit Guides are high vibrational and extremely evolved beings who have completed the cycle of birth and death in the physical plane and now serve as teachers, guides, and protectors to further elevate their vibrations even higher. The exchange is positive and assists both the spirit guide's soul, and the human being's soul to evolve and elevate in vibration through positive choices.
These guides work to assist you in processing and making sense of the guidance in your dreams and in your intuition. The quiet voice you hear in your head is often the voice of these teachers and guides. Additionally, they may make their presence known to you through signs and symbols. For me personally, seeing specific flowers, seeing anything from the Khmer culture repeatedly, or hearing certain songs reminds me of my spirit guide. As she was a Khmer noblewoman with very highly attuned spiritual gifts and a keen sense for if people are spinning the truth or not. An ability that I have and work diligently myself to improve daily.
Many people have only one guide, while others have multiple guides or a small team around them. Much of the structure of your guides participation depends on the distinct path and purpose of your life. A teacher, for instance, may have several guides, one in order to assist them through the academic aspects of their profession and another to assist them with the distinct emotional aspects of being a mentor for younger people. Police officers, firefighters, and soldiers will often have a "team" of guardians guiding and protecting them in the line of duty. Much of who your guide was is indicative of your own personal journey through life.
Despite popular belief, a spirit guide is almost never a passed over love one. Our loved ones DO stay with us in spirit, and we can contact them as we'd like - but they do not serve the same role as a spirit guide. Some individuals may have archangels or angels as spirit guides who are always with them. Yet, the presence of angels, it is important to remember, does not mean they are your permanent spirit guide. Angels can always be called on in times of distress to assist you for a short while. In the case that you do have an angel or archangel as your spirit guide or on your spirit based team of guides - changes are your mission in life is a complex one. You may be an individual traveling a challenging life path, if you have an angel as a spirit guide.
Everyone's spirit guide is always with them, whether the individual acknowledges their presence or not. We cannot call guides to us, nor can we send away the ones that we have at our will. They are a part of us and our particular journey. We do however have the ability to gain knowledge of who they are and what their role in our lives is and will be. We can always interact with our guides in proactive ways. If we'd like to know whom they are, we must simply just ask once we are in a quiet and meditative place. Whatever is revealed to us is their identity and key factors about who they are. Beings from the spiritual realm often send messages through signs and symbols. If you see a man wearing a nice suit, stay with that image as the person could be a philosopher or a seasoned businessperson. You may see an indigenous American, a monk, or perhaps no visual comes through - it's just key to keep your mind and intuition wide open to what you could see. If you have challenges discovering who your guide is, you can contact a psychic or intuitive sketch artist to help you. I had great luck working with Ros Coleman at http://www.roscoleman.com
Taking a proactive role in working with your guides can be a wonderful personal and spiritual growth tool. Unlike the beings who can advise us in the physical realm, the wisdom and advice of guides is not influenced by the nuances and petty things of this world. They reside in a higher vibrational realm, and the mundane aspects of your existence aren't factored in by them. As an example, if you seek guidance from your spirit guide regarding your romantic partner, the guide will ask you to focus on in what ways you are growing, what you are learning, what is left to learn, and what learning your partner is gathering from the relationship. This will get at the root and the true meaning of your relationship. The mundane aspects of it such as your partner being terrible at budgeting household finances or that they are messy with putting away or organizing their clothing is seen as irrelevant and petty.
Most incredibly, you can ask your guides to assist you in physical healing. Before you go to sleep for the night, ask that your guide helps you to receive healing as you are sleeping. You are never alone, your guide is there with you. Take refuge in knowing deeply that there is so much magic and healing to be found in this life at every turn.
This post is a succinct overview of the spiritual wellness treatments and practices that have helped me to reach this point in my awakening. I feel that for any path of focused practice to be feasible to maintain there must be methods employed to increase our awareness. In my experience, I have learned to focus on being able to interpret dream and meditation symbols, and to train to the level of Reiki Master practitioner. The key main components of my path are :
3. Dreams and vision interpretation
A handful of other methods act as additional support along the spiritual journey. However, the crux of the discovery method and tools I've used thus far are consistent meditation, self reiki attunement to maintain my vibration, and leveraging dream and meditation symbol interpretation to receive intuitive guidance. For some people, it may be possible to skip meditation, provided they are able to remain sensitive to incoming intuitive messages and other means of receiving insight and downloads. Tarot card reading does play a role in filling some of the roles performed by direct vision interpretation, but it is absolutely not as flexible and requires more intuitive focus to get to the necessary message. This is because the interpretations from the cards relies at times on the guidance the finite symbols in the cards can provide, and in a waking state it can be a bit more challenging to receive exact downloads that are as specific and directional as dream states or meditative visions. Put simply, visions can have infinite variations, and tarot cards are limited to visuals within their range of options.
As stated, I made a time commitment to reach Reiki Master Level, so that I could give myself, others, and situations reiki energy attunements. By and large Reiki attunements (both giving and receiving from self) helped in increasing my sensitivity to the energies at play.
I cannot emphasize more the point that intuitive clarity plays the largest role in self-growth acceleration. Hearing the divinely guided steps behind every change and tweak, or decision we must make is the most effective aspect of deepening our self understanding and ushering in new levels of our transformation. Prior to having a clear and trusted inner sense of intuition, to be honest, progress was slow for me. Tapping into my deepened intuition, owning my senses as an empath, and being able to unpack intuitive downloads significantly opened up new ways of receiving detailed information essential for my path.
I personally don't believe there have to be hard and fast rules to the personal and individual path to self-discovery. Life itself winds us along the preferred and necessary path. However, I do believe in practice and consistency, as well as benchmarking oneself to understand methods that have best garnered growth and expansion.
I was encouraged into meditation by the first palm/tarot/intuitive reader I ever went to. I had a HUGELY spiritual event occur in my life which somewhat blew my mind open the the possibility of what was and what is. In the bounds of the meditations she requested I do, I began seeing visions or visuals in my mind's eye. I poured through dream and vision interpretation literature to make sense of them. It was then that I discovered that I am at times receiving visions/images/insights in my mind that educated me about certain aspects of myself, my path, where I've been, and at times where I am going. I began to take better notice of these fleeting images and they became more vivid and lasted a bit longer. I also began to have random needs to nap, and those sometimes 15 minute short naps yielded unforgettable and vivid vision based dreams that I have near perfect recall of to this day.
As I meditated and focused more on clearing and cleaning my own energy, reiki became a natural next inclination. I noticed when I meditated that the palms of my hands became very warm. This lead me to believe that if I began training in the art of Reiki, that perhaps I could be adept at it. My boyfriend was the first to tell me "you're an empath." plain as day. It wasn't something that made sense to me, as I don't have the usual personality type or people pleasing tendencies of an empath. Though that is another aspect of self that I began to unearth as I realized that what I felt was the normal human experience was definitely not the experience had by all. The training in Reiki helped me become even more energy fluent and that fluency has helped me tap into my empath abilities to talk about personal growth concepts and challenges with others. Through these discussions, I also learn a great deal about myself and have epiphanies on the human condition and the myriad of reasons why we are all here.
In conclusion, this is my system of practice in a bit sized short post. As evidenced, the path of personal growth and awakening is quite flexible in the sense that it is fully integrated into my life experiences and it does not really present itself as a hobby or personal undertaking - separate from my daily life. As each of us are on our own path in this life, no two paths can or should look the same. I am merely sharing in hopes that whomever needs to find this explanation may, and in its words find new ideas for how to seek answers that are already within them. That was also a key bit of learning, that it is all untapped and within us - we needn't seek for much else outside except for the resources that can help us unburden and return to our true nature. With our true nature being a person guided by the soul, living life day by day being divinely guided by the soul which holds the blueprint for our true path. In my journey, that is when I learned that writing "Inner Glow Up" was part of my work to show others that it is all within them. They just have to clear away the dust of trauma, other people's expectations and earthly shaping, and then they are ready to step into their true selves.
Gisele Bundchen is many things - one of the highest paid models of all time, one of the front runners in the group of women that made curves fashionable again after the era of skinny models, and one half of one of the most watched celebrity couples. It’s her role in the latter that we are talking about today, because it would seem that Bundchen is out of the broom closet. Yes, Tom Brady shares in a number of interviews all of the rituals and the incredible Gisele quote “She said you’re lucky you married a witch – I’m just a good witch,” Brady said.
According to Brady, his former supermodel wife sets up an altar at all of his games - to energetically ensure his success and reinforce all of the energetic and intention work they do off the field. Brady relayed that Gisele gives him drops that she makes that are in some undisclosed holistic way, supposed to help his performance and ensure his success. Bundchen, much like fellow one half of power couple Kimye, Kim Kardashian...is also a believer in the power of crystal healing. Self described good witch Gisele Bundchen has been known to prescribe crystals to Tom
Brady to aid in his visualization of winning whatever given match up the Patriots may be up against.
Tom said "Gisele always makes a little altar for me at the game because she just wills it so much.” The area includes photos of the couple’s children for motivation. “And I have these little special stones and healing stones and protection stones and she has me wear a necklace and take these drops she makes, I say all these mantras, And I stopped questioning her a long time ago. I just shut up and listen.”
Bundchen has been open about her faith, practices, and spirituality...opening up to publications like the Wall Street Journal and Vogue with openness and positivity. So much openness in fact, that the Wall Street Journal described former supermodel Bundchen as the "ethereal high priestess of fashion, fitness, and fabulosity". In the bounds of the same interview, a picture of Gisele was painted with words - a picture that described the former VS Angel as "lugging in chunks of crystal that she had put out under the previous nights super blue blood moon" The writer commented on the most notable aspect of Bundchen...that she's like a living sunbeam due to her positivity.
Gisele commented, “I’m an optimistic person,” she says. “I believe that what we give energy to is what grows. If you focus on positivity and this higher, lighter vibration of love and good things, they will eventually come.”
A student of life, the supermodel turned author draws from astrology, Buddhism, Taoism and the Mexican spiritual guru Don Miguel Ruiz—she even gave everyone at her 2009 wedding his book The Mastery of Love. She meditates every morning, and even went so far as to leverage meditation as a method to breathe through the pain of childbirth. Having given birth to son Benjamin Rein Brady in a pool of water in the Boston apartment she shared with husband Tom Brady when the time came.
Not only is the witchy woman a fan of crystals, meditation, and astrology - she believes in the power of vibration. When she named her skincare like, she chose the name "Sejaa". From the Portuguese word "seja" meaning "to be"; but Gisele added the extra a because as a firm believer in the vibration of words - she wanted the title of the skincare line to be an exhalation of ahhhh! and the feeling of letting go and breathing outward.
The start of Gisele's dive into spirituality and esoteric wisdom came during some of her busiest periods in her career. She elaborates in an interview with Vogue that she felt like her life had turned into "wake up, take pictures, go to sleep, wake up the next day and take pictures". In that blur, the model logged on to Amazon and typed in "spiritual books" as a query into the search engine. This led to a passion for the writings of Miguel Ruiz, which taught Gisele first and foremost to rely on her own instinct: “The more you trust your intuition, the more empowered you become, the stronger you become, and the happier you become.”
Absolutely a sentiment that I can get behind, because that is what the Inner Glow Up book is all about. Unburdening yourself with outdated energy, mindsets, and coping mechanisms that keep you disconnected from your intuition. One of my favorite of the 90s supers is the incomparable Christy Turlington. Her effortless beauty and unique look contributed to her enduring career as a supermodel and the Christy of legend in the now famous Cindy, Christy, Naomi, Claudia, Linda group of megawatt model babes.
Christy has made it public knowledge that she’s a huge proponent of Ayurveda. The ancient Indian pursuit of prolonging the life and using natural remedies to treat aging afflictions as well as a method for holistic preventative medicine. Ayurveda is an art and a science built around balancing an individual based on their distinct physical, emotional, and life rhythm. The former supermodel also pairs her Ayurvedic practice with meditation and a devout adherence to yoga. Turlington even went so far as to cross over into entrepreneurship by creating her Ayurvedic inspired skincare line, Sundari. Christy began Sundari back in the year 1999, but parted ways with the brand in 2003 for undisclosed and publicly unknown reasons.
The model wasn’t always so holistic, she started smoking at age 13 as a young model. She didn’t quit until she was around 26 years old and beginning an undergraduate degree at New York University in Eastern Philosophy and Comparative religion. The model famously stated she’d rather gain ten pounds and lose her modeling career than to be down ten pounds and unhealthy and addicted to nicotine and smoking. She is now an outspoken voice regarding COPD, a disease she lives and copes with.
The former model is a practitioner of Ashtanga yoga, a style of yoga known for its methodical attention to specifics. The name, meaning “eight limbed yoga” is Turlington’s favorite style because it is yoga built on discipline and fortifying the inner self, rather than chasing flexibility goals like many modern yoga practitioners do.
In an interview, when asked if she pursues yoga for fitness reasons or for spiritual ones Christy Turlington said “Yoga is a spiritual practice that has incredible physical benefits. I look at it as a lifestyle, a way of living that connects me to me. You know, the word "Yoga" means union. It's like everything in Yoga yokes or unites you to something higher, the highest part of yourself.
What I did for a living for so many years separated who I was from what I did, and Yoga has brought back all the parts of me. Yoga puts me in a place that is a little bit less about doing and more about being, which enables me, in fact, to do more.”The statuesque Turlington practices yoga in her home three mornings a week, and tries to take two classes a week.
In an interview with Time magazine she relayed her views on yoga the practice versus yoga the workout. “"I was interested in cleaning my body on a deeper level. Yoga really purifies your organs and blood. You feel that. You feel that circulation of energy. But the real lesson yoga gives you is learning how to be present."
Even though Turlington studies all six branches of yoga (and views her charity work and anti-smoking activism as seva— "service," an aspect of Karma Yoga), she's not critical of the popular exercise-oriented yoga boom, other than to worry some about the lack of standardization among teachers.
"Gym yoga isn't always the healthiest thing. I talk to so many people who say they've hurt themselves in a class and will never go back.
"I have friends who simply want to have a yoga butt. And there is such a thing. They're just interested in the kind of body they're going to have, although not everybody's going to have a Madonna body. I've been to lots of yoga classes, and there are a lot of different kinds of yoga bodies. I'm amazed at the strength and suppleness I see that some people have underneath very voluptuous shells."
On a season 16 episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Kim and Kanye visited his hometown of Chicago. The couple met with one of Kanye’s old friends, Ryhmefest to talk about interpersonal drama that took place on Twitter where Kim felt that Rhymefest was saying unfounded things about her husband. The trio worked out their differences and Rhymefest extended an olive branch in the form of a small gift to Kim. It was a bit shocking to those who don't know the spiritual side of the middle Kardashian sister.
Rhymefest gifted Kim Kardashian a healing crystal called a herkimer diamond. The crystal is not truly a diamond but instead is a double-terminated quartz crystal. The herkimer diamond is a stone that is known for helping amplify energy, and are often called the "high vibe seekers" of the crystal world. The gorgeous stone is reported to manifest pure light and act as powerful multipliers of spiritual energy. A wonderful crystal to give, and to receive.
This seemed like a small token of friendship and a small gesture, but in reality it had a bigger meaning. Kim Kardashian made it public knowledge that she used healing crystals to get over the now infamous Paris robbery that parted her with the tremendous 20 carat diamond ring from husband Kanye West. The reality tv star and cosmetics, fragrance, and shape wear mogul in the making took time off after the incident due to understandable PTSD around the terrifying and unfortunate ordeal. She relayed to The Cut...
"I took some time off last year. And when I did, it seems everyone who came over would bring me healing crystals," Kardashian West said. "I didn’t know much about them at first, but I investigated them and got really into them. I’m around them more now, and it’s been really cool. I don’t have tons of them in my house, but they seem to give off an overall calm energy."
In true Kim K fashion, she was able to spin a positive out of the negative ordeal and was inspired by the crystals during the creative process for her fragrance line. The reality star turned fragrance alchemist related that clear quartz, citrine, and rose Quartz were the crystals that inspired her 3 offering fragrance line. These 3 stones are associated with raising vibration, acting as bottled sunshine, and manifesting loving and nurturing energy respectively. Kim kardashian didn’t elaborate that these were the exact healing crystals that she received from friends and family - but simply mentioned she was inspired by them. If you want to follow the trendsetting Kardashian, pick up these gorgeous crystals and benefit from their healing and soothing vibrations.
Of course crystals are no substitute for therapy or medical care, but they may just help you remember to stay positive and engage in the positive habits that help you stay on the mindfulness plan discussed in therapy or pursuing the healthy habits outlined by a trained medical professional. Below at the 22 minute mark, you can hear Kim talk about her crystals and how they inspired her fragrance collection as she shares a conversation with model Ashley Graham on Ashley's podcast "Pretty Big Deal".
In one of the more recent episodes of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, the sisters and their mom Kris Jenner can be seen saging the house after Kourtney has an unfortunate run in with a thief. I wasn't prepared to see saging talked about in what for all intents and purposes, is "mainstream media".
In one of the Season 17 episodes of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Kourtney Kardashian relays to her sister Khloe that someone had previously stolen from Scott Disick to the tune of several thousands of dollars. The eldest Kardashian went on to explain that someone whom they've trusted within the house to watch the children has been stealing money, an iPad, and rifling through Kourtney's office with a flashlight during strange hours. Khloe naturally encourages her sister to confront the alleged thief in an attempt to stand her ground on her own property.
The presumed thief leaves the property upon learning that Kourtney is on to her antics and theft. The scene ends with both Kardashians in hot pursuit, with their friend Stephanie Shepherd in tow to try and chase the thief for a confrontation and reaffirmation of common decency. Unfortunately the thief isn't confronted nor is the topic discussed further.
The scene transitions to Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian speaking with their mother Kris Jenner about both being frustrated by people trying to take advantage of them and bringing negative energy into their space. Khloe suggests that they sage Kourtney's home after the unfortunate encounter and the three women go about smudging in every corner and asking all negative/ bad energy to leave the space and go out the open doors, never to return. Khloe advocated for a once a year saging, but I'd love to encourage the Kardashians to sage more often than that. In my opinion, once every New Moon smudging with Palo Santo is a great cadence to get set up on, with a finishing sage every Full Moon.
I am loving the history lesson within this easy to read and easy to understand Vogue article in which modern shaman and energy healer Colleen McCann goes over some of the basics about saging as a practice and how it helps to impact the energy within spaces. Her overview on what she calls "spiritual hygiene" sends me.
Next up is a short clip of Khloe and Kim Kardashian presumably on vacation or at a resort of some type. This clip is taken from the Season 17th teaser trailer, and the episode has far as I know has not aired. The two are seen with sage bundles and are actively saging themselves. Khloe makes commentary about saging herself, specifically her heart, so that none of the disgusting people of the world can harm it. Kim makes a more general comment stating, "I'm going to sage myself."
I find it a tad comical that both ladies had sage bundles just on them at wherever they've escaped off to, during what I assume is some sort of family drama. The pair appear to be on a golf cart or some sort of little cart and have the appearance of being in hiding, and in saging. LOL. The Kardashians are a polarizing concept, and while I don't agree with everything they say, do, or sell...I think it's admirable and commendable that they show their spiritual practices and holistic wellness treatments on the show. They are through the sheer force of their reach, opening up these concepts to a curious and impressionable audience who may have had limited or zero exposure to concepts like sound healing, crystal healing, reiki, energy healing, mediums, and saging or smudging.
While I realize there is an entire dialogue out there about the concept of saging as being unethical due to it leading to deforestation of saging and smudging crops and botanicals and the notion of saging and smudging as cultural appropriation - I think it's key to remember one key concept that I've always come back to time and time again. Spiritual and holistic knowledge is channeled, not learned. Many world cultures have all arrived at the same healing foods, herbs, practices, and spiritual methodology and beliefs - let's just leave it at that. People globally have received shared divine wisdom that belongs to no single culture or group of people. There is enough division in this world - let's focus on unity and oneness.
On a whim, I decided to purchase a gift voucher for my best friend for a halotherapy session. She had been working on clearing some energy that was residing in the lungs using breathing techniques and breathe of fire yoga breath technique. In the time, it seemed like the perfect gift to compliment her current self work and self-healing. We decided to go through the experience together; both climbing into a small glass chamber that looked a bit like a super chic crane game...only WE were the prizes.
We were seated on a small bench, with our bare feet dug into pink Himalayan salt which covered the bottom of the container. With the door shut, we looked at each other not knowing what to expect. With a gentle rumbling sound, the salt delivery mechanism began pumping super super fine grain sand out into cube we occupied. It had no smell and was a very pleasant sensation of clean filtered air pumping into the room. The general consensus between us both was that after a few minutes we were breathing more clearly, and getting more oxygen than usual. Our breathing went from what we felt was "our normal" to a more expansive from the diaphragm, opening breath.
I started to feel a bit woozy from being able to breathe with more depth. It was like when you're in the mountains and the air is thin, and then you return to a lower altitude and your lungs open up and the air comes streaming in. We plugged in for a 30 minute session and chatted a bit, meditated a bit, observed some silence, and true to us.....shared a handful of laughs. The purifying process came through exhalation, with each in breath being bigger than the last and each out breath being more clarifying than the last. The light headed feeling from the beginning was replaced with a clear headed feeling. That feeling when all of your senses come online fully. Colors are a bit more vivid, your thoughts are organized and accessible in a more orderly fashion. Alignment within comes easily, when there is less resistance from whatever dormant emotions and energetic clutter you've released.
The experience with halotherapy overall was the perfect way to spend a Saturday morning. It was cleansing and re-energizing. The lungs correspond to grief, as an emotion and this emotion - often described as unexpressed love can clutter up your energetic system due to the loss of a person be it because they have passed on or because they have left your life. Releasing and cleansing this emotion out of the body is key because it frees the body of burdens that can get in the way of fully breathing in and providing the rest of the body with purifying air and according to some beliefs, chi (life force). The validity of whether or not salt therapy really does anything for the body, mind, and spirit is of course subject to your own attunement. If you feel like cleansing purifying breaths are what you need intuitively, definitely find a facility where you can do some deep breathing in a salt chamber or salt room.
